European Capital of Culture

A lesson plan for students in Year 10 (2nde)
Lion

Six cities are vying for the title of Capital of Culture.
Which will be crowned with the title for 2008?

Building
The European Union decided in 1999 that, each year, the European Council should choose a city to become "European Capital of Culture".

The selection process is a competition, the winner being the city considered most able to represent their country and Europe by putting on a year-long celebration of international cultural events highlighting European culture.

2004 Lille, 2005 Cork (Ireland), 2006 Patras (Greece), 2007 Luxembourg, 2008... In 2008, the Cultural Capital of Europe will be a city in Great Britain. Here is a list of the cities submitted by the U.K.'s Ministry of Culture are:

BIRMINGHAM
BELFAST
BRISTOL
CARDIFF
MANCHESTER
NEWSCASTLE

TASKS

What have these cities got to offer? Which one should they be chosen? Why? You will be divided into 6 groups, one for each city.  You will prepare a campaign for your city and present its attributes.

  1. Each group will put together a file on their city, to be given in on 13th March. These files will be marked by your teachers. To complete this task, you will have to do some research on the Internet.

Your work should include an introduction explaining what the competition is about, an argument in which you give reasons why you believe your city should be chosen, and a conclusion looking towards the future and giving your personal views. Also include a webliography at the end, showing your sources. Only pictures which reinforce your argument should be inserted, and please don't just copy and paste text from the Internet.

  2. 20th and 27th March: each group will have to present its candidate city to the rest of the class (without notes and in in a limited time), show the importance of its culture, its main characteristics and attractions, and its European standing.

  3. You are a member of the European Council selection committee. Choose one city from the six selected British cities to become Capital of Culture 2008. Explain and justify your choice.
