Kentucky Fried Chicken

KFC logo

In the mid 30's, in the South of Louisville Kentucky, Harland Sanders received in his restaurant starving passengers. Even though there was nothing new about fried chicken, Harland found a way to combine 11 spices and herbs with flour to create a new "finger licking' good" coating.

His new way of cooking chicken won a large success all over the country. Passionate, he began to open lots of restaurants with franchises and rapidly the little restaurant became a world wide trademark.

KFC sell fried chicken in various forms. They also sell Kentucky Grilled Chicken and two lines of sandwiches. A variety of smaller finger food products are available too like chicken strips, wings, wraps, nuggets and popcorn chicken.

Finally, to show you that KFC is a world wide trademark, I can say that KFC is present in over 110 countries, with 10 million consumers every day in nearly 16,000 restaurants.

Slang

Slang, which is the abbreviation of "street language", is the use of informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker’s dialect or language. We will talk here about the American/ English slang. There are two types of slang nowadays: the written and the spoken.

We use written slang every day, using internet and specially while chatting, and also SMS. The reason why slang is so used is because of the easier, simpler and shorter spelling. For example, instead of using “you”, we use "u", instead of "are", we use "r", instead of "why", we use "y", there is also abbreviations for complete phrases such as: "lol" for "laughing out loud", "tyt" for "take your time".

For spoken slang, we use familiar words or expressions that usually represent the harder, more formal words. For example, "Do you know where the action is?" This is an informal word that could be replaced by "excitement". "Hey don’t blow a fuse!" which could be replaced by "lose your nerve".

Marmite

Marmite jar

Marmite is a brownish vegetable extract with a toxic odor, saline taste and an axle grease consistency that has somehow captivated the British.

Though the recipe itself is a secret, the ingredients include yeast and vegetable extracts, salt, niacin, spices, folic acid and vitamins B1, B2 and B12. They slather it on buttered toast, put it in gravies, mix it with cheddar cheese and beans and boil it into catarrh-chasing broths. It is also used to wean infants and it has been sent to troops in some wars because of its abundance of B vitamins and its capacity to ward off deficiency diseases.

They buy it at a 24 million-jar-per-year clip that has enshrined it as a national symbol. Marmite is exported to 30 countries and it is definitely a love-or-hate type of food.

The product was first created in 1902. It is produced in UK by Unilever Bestfoods UK. Marmite’s name comes from France because of the cooking pot.

Erasmus

Erasmus by Holbein

The Erasmus Programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Student) is a student exchange programme between universities. Its name is from a Dutch theologian named Desiderus Erasmus Roterodamus, who was born in 1466 and died in 1536. He lived in many European countries to increase his knowledge.

How does the programme work? You have to be in the second year of university and a European citizen. You can study for 3 months or even a full academic year. You'll have to pay for your accommodation and general living costs even though you can receive a grant from the European Commission.

According to many interviews and a movie called "The Spanish Apartment" (2002 by Cedric Klapis), I can say that the Erasmus Programme is not only studying, studying and studying... you can have lots of fun too!

Saudi Arabia

King of Saudi Arabia

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is, in my opinion, a country based on the English language. Wherever you go in Saudi Arabia you will find everything in English.

Actually Saudi Arabia is one of the main countries supporting the American way of life. For example there are 2 American high schools and 6 English high schools. Churches are prohibited in Saudi Arabia, but fortunately there is Aramco. This stands for the Arabian American Oil Company. Built in a compound, there is a church in it.

Saudi Arabia has also its daily English newspaper which was launched specifically to inform the increasing number of English-speaking readers in Saudi Arabia.

If you ever decide to go and live in Saudi Arabia, English is your only way to communicate if you do not know Arabic of course. So knowing English is a must because Saudi Arabia is just one of the gulf countries that uses English during their daily life.

My Trip to Minnesota

I went to the south of Minnesota on my own for 6 weeks this summer. I was in a typical American family named the Bickle, in a nice town called Rochester. Rochester is well known for the Mayo Clinic, a very famous hospital in the USA.

My main job over there as a pair was taking care of the 3 kids: John, 12 years old, Kaitlin 9  and Sarah 6. They stayed at home all day while their parents were working. I was responsible for keeping an eye on them and I had to help them with chores.

It was a really good experience for me, it gave me more autonomy and maturity. The fact that I was alone help me to improve my english and make me more confidence. It was a really good experience for me!

The King's Speech

The King's Speech poster

The King’s Speech is an English production written by David Seidler. It’s about Georges VI, King of England, struggling against his stammer and making friends with his speech therapist.

Colin Firth plays Georges VI and Geoffrey Rush plays Lionel Logue, the therapist. They are very efficient. Georges VI was Prince Albert, known as Bertie in the movie. He was the son of George V and the father of Queen Elisabeth I.

The movie begins with Bertie unable to expess himself during a speech, then his wife persuades him to see Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist. They became friends while Logue was curing Bertie. Then, Bertie reveals his painful childhood, one of unfairness and bad treatment, which caused his handicap. Logue didn't use to be a doctor. When George V died, his older son became King Edward VIII but he abdicated for a love affair. As a result Bertie became king!

Thanks to Logue, he managed to say the declaration of war with Germany, a touching radio speech which gave the movie its title.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan

Peter Pan, which was alternately titled « The Boy who would Never Grow Up », was first performed in London in the early 19th. At the origin Pet Pan is a play, created by the Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1850-1937).Traditionally, the character has been played on stage by an adult woman, so the presentation of the character on stage has never been viewed as implying how Peter really looks.

Peter Pab is a skinny little boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up. He spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang: the Lost Boys, interacting with Indians, ferries and Pirates.

The notion of a boy who would never grow up was based on J. M. Barrie's older brother who died in an accident the day before he turned 14, and thus always stayed a young boy in his mother's mind. Nowadays we also talk about Peter Pan syndrome for the grown up who doesn't grow up.

The Simpsons

The Simpsons

The Simpsons is an American animated series. It was created by Matt Groening for the American channel FBC. The story takes place in the fictional city of Springfield, invented by the creator.

It's the story of a family composed by Homer, the father, Marge, the mother, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, the three children. They are representing the American working class. The series is a satirical critic of the American society. Physically, the characters are yellow, it's quite special, we just see it in that series!

The origin of the series is an idea from Matt Groening. First it was very short episodes and after they became very long. There is now a film. Something special is the opening sequence: it changes for each episode! The characters are different from each other but they are all very funny. We can say that this series is good entertainment.

Pete Doherty

Pete Doherty is a rocker, a poet and an actor in his spare time. He was born in Hexam in 1979. When he finished his studies he created a band whose name was The Libertines. After their separation Peter created a new band whose name was Babyshambles.

At this moment he started to talk about “Arcady” in his songs which is a dream of a better England in his opinion, with no rules, no police, somewhere where he can do what he wants.

At the same time he was following a treatment for his drugs addictions. But it failed. Peter Doherty is considered as a drug addict and has had many problems with the English authorities. But being jailed doesn't’t disturb him anymore, he said “Nothing is better than prison for writing songs, because you have nothing else to do”.

He was prohibited from staying in England, so Peter went to France and is now living in Paris with Alexandra Paressant.

Green Day

Green Day

The story of Green Day started a long time ago in California when young friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt formed their first band Sweet Children. Soon the band got a drummer Al Sobrante who considerably helped the band’s development by booking a lot of shows.

In 1989 they released the song 1,000 Hours, which brought the band more fans, more gigs and eventually a record deal: an independent label Lookout! Records released their first 2 albums.

Just before the release of their first album, Sweet Children changed their name to Green Day. Soon after the release another change came: Al Sobrante quit the band and was replaced by Tre Cool who became Green Day’s permanent drummer. Green Day were becoming more and more popular and in 2004, the album American Idiot was a big success. They earned a lot of awards and prizes.

Their last album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009 and won the Grammy Award of the Best Rock Album of the year.

Baseball

Baseball

Baseball was created in 1755 in England but it was in America where the game was developed. The first championship appeared in 1857 and the national league was created in 1876.

Baseball is a team sport with the same origins as the cricket. It's played with bats to hit the ball, and gloves to catch it. In a baseball match two teams play and rotate between attack and defense. Ten to thirteen players are on the pitch and if one of the thrower's team catch the ball when it's in the air, the striker is out. A match is composed of nine parts. When three strikers are out, it's the other team to strike. Players score a point when they arrived at the home plate or when they do a home run (when the striker throws the ball out of the pitch marks).

Baseball is a famous sport in America just after basketball, and it's mainly played in North America and Canada.

Gaelic Football

Gaelic Football

Gaelic football was first codified in 1887 and the first match was played between the county of Louth and the county of Meath at Slane village in Ireland.

A Gaelic pitch is similar to a rugby pitch but considerably larger. The pitch is made with grass; it's rectangular and stretching 145 meters long and 90 meters wide. At each end of the pitch, there are H-shaped goalposts.

Gaelic football matches last for 60 minutes divided in two halves of 30 minutes. The team consist of fifteen players and fifteen replacements. The game is played with a round leather ball. A player couldn’t make more than 4 steps without making a dribble like in basketball or making a toe-tap.

To win, a team should have more points than the other. To score points the team should put the ball between the two goalposts. Up to the crossbar it scores 1 point and if there is a goal it scores 3 points.

The Kooks

The Kooks

Their music is rock but we can call it Indie Rock or Alternative Rock. The group is a recent one: it was formed in 2004 by Luke Pritchard (guitarist and singer), Hugh Harris (lead guitarist), Paul Garred (drummer) and also Max Rafferty (bassist).

The origin of the group is quite simple: all the original members of the band met as students in England in the Brighton institute of modern music.
They all shared the same passion for music. What made them form the group is the fact they all loved the same idols such as The Rolling Stones, The Strokes, The Police, Bob Dylan or David Bowie... They're called The Kooks because of David Bowie's song.

To start their career, they played a cover version of a Strokes' song entitled Reptilia. It was a success and they released their first album in 2006, Inside In Inside Out, and two years after a second, Konk. We're waiting for the third!

McDonald's

Bigmac

McDonalds is the first global food service and the most popular in the world. All of the young people know McDonalds. The first creators were Richard and Maurice McDonald, two brothers. They opened their first restaurant, called "McDonald's Barbecue restaurant" in San Bernardino, California in 1940. But in 1948, they became disaffected by this style of restaurant. So the two brothers developed the idea of an "assembly line" with a reduced menu cooked very quickly. On 12 December 1948, the new revamped McDonalds restaurant opened. But in 1954, Ray Kroc pitched an idea to opening up several restaurants to the Mcdonald's brothers. It went public with the company's first offering on the stock exchange. ”McDo” sells hamburgers, chicken products, french fries, salads, breakfast items, soft drinks, shakes and dessert. McDonald's has 31,000 locations in 120 countries and 61 millions of people come each day.

Hard Rock Cafe

 Hard Rock Cafe logo

Hard Rock Cafe is a world-wide chain of theme restaurants.

The first Hard Rock Cafe opened in London in 1971. The company was founded by Peter Morton and Isaac Tigrett. Immediately it was a great success and the founders decided to expand their business abroad. So since 1982, many new Hard Rock Cafes opened in very big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Berlin. The Seminole Tribe of Florida bought out the whole company in December 2006.

In a Hard Rock Cafe, you can have a drink or eat something but it is most famous for the concerts which are given inside. It is also popular for music memorabilia: you can see many instruments or partitions that belonged to rock'n'roll artists.

In 2006, a Hard Rock Park opened in South Carolina. It contained many attractions but it was a total failure and was closed in 2008.

The Union Flag

The Union Jack flag

The flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Flag, also called the Union Jack. In 1194, the King of England, Richard I, decided to introduce the cross of Saint George as the national flag of England.

In 1603, King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England, and he decided to unite the Scottish and English flags, combining the cross of Saint George and the cross of Saint Andrew. This flag was also called the Union Jack. “Jack” means a kind of flag used by ships to announce their nationality.

Then in 1801, Ireland was united with Great Britain and the cross of Saint Patrick was added to the flag. This new flag is not symmetrical. Scotland joined the Union before Ireland, so Saint Andrew’s cross has the most honorable position: it’s above Saint Patrick’s cross near the flagstaff.

If the flag flies upside down, this is a signal indicating distress, but it’s also insulting the Crown.

Sea Shepherd

Sea Shepherd ship

Sea Shepherd is a non-governmental association established in 1977 by Paul Watson, the co-founder of Greenpeace (1969). This organization presents itself like a defender of ocean wild-life.

Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. Their most spectacular operations surely take place in the southern ocean against Japanese illegal whaling. Their objective: a decrease of killed whales by hundred percent. Only by their presence, Sea Shepherd's fleet stop the killing of whales.

These operations are not safe at all; last year a vessel from the Sea Shepherd sank in the middle of the southern ocean after a collision with a Japanese boat. They need to sink the Japanese whaling fleet economically. It really is the only language that the whalers understand – profit and loss, and Sea Shepherd's job is to boost their losses and lower their profits.

Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both students at Standford university in California.

Page and Brin named the search engine the built Google, a play on the word "googol", the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name reflects the immense volume of information that exists, and the scope of Google's mission: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

But Google isn't just the famous search engine, in addition to its standard web search engine, Google has released over the years a number of online productivity tools such as Gmail, Google maps, Google hearth and they even created their own web browser: GoogleChrome.

The revenues of Google were of 23.651 billion dollars in 2009.

Carnivorous Plants

carnivorous plants

There are about 550 carnivorous plants in the world, six species and three types of trap:

- the drosera, which belongs to the sub-active trap
- the sarracenia, the darlingtonia, the nepenthes and the cephalotus which belong to passive trap
- The dionea which belongs to the active trap.

The droseras are plants which glue the insect. Once it is stuck, slowly the plant folds inside to digest the caught insect. The sarracenia, the darlingtonia, the nepenthes and the cephalotus are similar. These are passive traps. They only wait for the moment an insect falls in the tube.

The dionea is the most popular and well-known carnivorous plant. It’s an active trap. When an insect lands inside the trap, it closes very quickly and the insect begins to be digested.

There are carnivorous plant species we can only find in specific countries such as the cephalotus follicularis in Australia or the darlingtonia californica in North America. Carnivorous are rare plants and often unknown, but they are plants you can take care of.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Metropolitan museum of art, New York

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s largest and finest art museums. Its collection includes more than 2 million works of art spanning 5 thousand years of world culture from prehistory to the present.

J.T. Johnson first opened the museum in 1872 on the Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Originally the collection consisted of a stone Roman sarcophagus and 174 European paintings. Later 2 American architects built the actual Victorian style building on the eastern edge of Central Park.

The museum is divided in 19 departments, each one gathers works of an artistic kind (Medieval Art, Greek Antiquity…). One part of the museum is devoted to rooms from different periods, which are grouped together in a house inside the MET. During the visit, you discover several style and you can guess the American living context from the XVI to the XIX century. I have been touched by the richness of the MET and hope to go back there!

My trip to England

I went to England during a week in August. I was with a group of about 50 French teenagers. We were with one or two French people in our host families; I was with my cousin, a Luxemburger and an English teacher from Italy.

We were in a school called KSE: "Kent School of English". It is a school for foreign people. Young people can go there from 1 to 4 weeks and from 12 to 20. We were about 250 people from Austrian, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.

Each morning we had 3 hours of lesson with a different teacher. We were 12 per class. On afternoons we had to choose an activity like tennis, bowling, beach volley, and so on. On evenings we did activities like barn dancing or karaoke with Austrian pupils. One afternoon we went to Canterbury but it was raining, and on the last day we went to London.

It was a very nice trip but unfortunately it was too short to progress much.

The head of Commonwealth is Elizabeth II who was elected in 1952 but the general secretary of Commonwealth is Kamalesh Sharma. The first colonies who joined the Commonwealth were Canada, Australia, New-Zealand, and South Africa.

Every 2 years all government leaders have a meeting. They discuss Commonwealth priorities. The next meeting will take place in Australia in 2011.

In 1971, the Singapore declaration of Commonwealth principles that follow the human rights declaration was created. The purpose of the Commonwealth is to promote democracy and equality and fight discrimination.

The Commonwealth reunited 19 African countries like Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria, 13 American countries like the Bahamas, 8 Asian Countries like Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, 3 Europe countries like Malta, and Great Britain and 11 Oceania countries like Fiji. All these countries were united by common interest but there is no treaty.

Motor Racing

formula 1

Car racing is one of the world's most watched televised sports. Formula one is the best-known because drivers race at high speeds, up to 360 km/hr. But today, I am going to talk about some other famous races.

The Indianapolis 500 miles race is an American automobile race. It takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana annually over the Memorial Day weekend, and lasts about 3 hours.

Bathurst 1000 is a 1000 kilometers touring race, at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia on the second Sunday in October. 1000 kilometers is equivalent to 620 miles. However, even if the distance is slightly higher, Bathurst lasts about 6 hours because the Bathrust's track is composed of speeds and lows parts whereas Indianapolis is a very simple and speed track.

Rallying is distinguished by running not on a circuit, but participants and theirs co-drivers drive between set special stages on tab or on ground. It's a wonderful sport, that's why many people like it.
