The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs but also for the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of Eros. Airsoft
Airsoft, or airsoft guns, are plastic replicas of weapon which fire plastic balls thanks to compressed air. Airsoft was born in Japan after World War II. The first replicas were only to collect, but they were modified in the 70’s to work with compressed air, and in the 80’s with a little electric motor. Airsoft appeared in Europe in the 80’s, mostly in U.K, where there are nowadays a lot of active players, several magazines and an official federation. The aim of the game is to reach the objectives of the scenarios, like taking a hostage or a man-hunt. You play with airsoft guns in woods, abandoned cities or in big buildings. But all of the places where you play must be known by the authorities and exclusively reserved for airsoft players. When you are touched by a ball, you are definitely eliminated, or for a while, or you have to go to a “respawn” point. It’s not a dangerous game if you respect some security rules, like always wearing protection glasses. Arthur Lefort

Mean GirlsMean Girls was produced in 2004 by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey. Its cast includes Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, and Rachel MacAdams as Regina George. It relates the story of a teenager of African origins who arrives in a school in Chicago and face school life. She has trouble making friends, then she meets people and becomes the most famous girl of the school. The film describes quite well the principal problems of our society based on reputation, relationships and fashion. I chose this subject because it shows and explains with humour the problems we can really face in our lives. Amandine Malherbe
The Ford Motor CompanyStarted by Henry Ford in 1903 and still headed by his great-grandson William Clay Ford, this company is the symbol of the American automobile industry. In 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, called the Tin Lizzy, priced at $850. It was an immediate success. In 1913 Ford set up an assembly-line systeme of production, in which each worker performed only one specialized task. One year later, Ford astonished the buisiness world by more than doubling the minimum wage of his workers to $5 a day. He reasoned that if his employees earned more, the company would sell more cars to them and keep employees loyal. By 1916 Ford had lowered the price of the Model T to about $350, making the cars affordable to all workers. Paul Gillet & Encarta.msn.com
The Daily Telegraph is the most published newspaper in Great Britain. The first edition, launched by the Colonel Arthur Sleigh, hit the streets on 29th June 1855. The printer, Joseph Levy, took over the paper in August, and he re-launched it with the slogan, "the largest, best, and cheapest newspaper in the world". In this way, sales increased rapidly and within one year the new paper was outselling The Times. Little by little, The Daily Telegraph supported the conservative Party, and set against the capital punishment. In 1937 the paper became the main newspaper and its sales increased over 1 million a day after the 2nd World War. Today, the newspaper, owned by the Barclay brothers, is the biggest selling broadsheet in Britain with a circulation of about 925,000 per day. It offers home and international news coverage, a business section, and a compact daily sport section. To conclude, The Daily Telegraph had a quick development in this last century, and stays in the British minds as the newspaper of the records. David Le Pahun
ScotlandScotland is one of three nations with England and Wales that compose Great-Britain. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, but the biggest city is Glasgow. The other big towns are Stirling, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Dundee. Scotland is made of 800 islands. There are many mountains which are not higher than 1400. There are also many lochs (Scottish word for lake), but forests are quite rare. Over 5 million people live in Scotland, on 79000 km2; that represents 64 people per km2. Every year, in August, there are traditional games, called the Highlands Games, where the strongest big men have to show their strength. For example they throw a trunk of 6 meters long and the goal is that it has to touch the ground vertically. The symbols of Scotland are the thistle which is a plant, and the kilt, which looks like a skirt but it is worn by men. To conclude, Scotland is a country with its own culture and its own history. Andy WarholAndy Warhol was born in 1930 and died in 1987. He is the most famous American artist of pop art. After a career as advertising agent, he decided to make some art. He was interested by mass reproduction, the effect produced by the repetition of an image. He compares himself to a machine which make many reproduction of a serigraphy. The main idea is to make a satire of the industrial world, to put out all emotions. Andy Warhol treats everything on the same stage: President Kennedy’s murder, Campbell’s soup, stars, Elvis Presley, or the atomic bomb. But whereas media make gods of the stars or politicians, Warhol removes any personalit : he aligns them like bottles of cola in a supermarket. For example, Marilyn Monroe’s faces are like a product of mass consummation. Andy Warhol is the icon of pop art. Nowadays his painting are very famous and even fashion uses his paintings (to make tee-shirts, bags,…). Now he is still very famous. Marion Strohl

GibraltarGibraltar is in the Southern coast of Spain opposite Africa so we talk about the Straits of Gibraltar (14,4 km). The territory covers 6,543 square kilometers. The highest point is the Rock of Gibraltar with 426 meters of altitude. The Rock is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to 230 Barbary Macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe. A superstition says that if the monkeys ever leave, so will the British. The Rock is a popular tourist attraction, particularly among British tourists. The monetary unit of Gibraltar is the pound sterling. The euro isn’t officially accepted in Gibraltar, but a post offices can give you some pounds. The official language is English but most residents also speak Spanish. The main form of transport is the car but motorbikes are popular. Unlike the other British territories, traffic drives on the right but Bobbies help the circulation! There is also a cable car which runs from ground level to the top of the rock. Simon Dubreuille
The Triskele
The triskele is one of the most popular Irish symbols. It is made of two parts, the heart and the three legs. These two have had two meanings in the History of Ireland: during the Celtic times, the heart was the symbol of the world and the legs represent the three biggest elements of the Irish culture, fire, water and the sky. These three elements were rolling around the world as if they governed it. But after the Christianization of Ireland, the Triskele had a different meaning. The heart still symbolized the world but the three legs were an image for the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Today, the Triskele is mostly used as a commercial symbol and it has lost a part of its real meaning. But some North Irish give to it a political meaning; for them the triskele symbolizes the unity of Ireland and the fight against England supremacy. Guillaume Bellanger
CaliforniaCalifornia borders the pacific ocean, Oregon, Nevada, and the Mexican state of Baja California, with an area of 411000 km2. It' s the third largest state in the USA. California's geography ranges from sandy and rocky beaches, to the Sierra Nevada or to desert areas. California was marked by the gold rush of the 1850s. It's also one of the richest states because of Orange County and Hollywood. It has long been promoted as a kind of paradise. But California has also got a western culture, people own ranches, cows, goats... that part of California is often forgotten by the rest of the world. There's a big racist problem there. Mexicans are trying to get in the Californian life. Because of that a part of the population speaks Spanish. California's food is influenced by Mexico too. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the American cinematography industry. Mathilde Maupertuis

Amy Winehouse
Amy Jade Winehouse is an English singer-songwriter, known for her eclectic mix of various musical genres including soul, jazz and R&B. She was born on 14th September 1983 in Enfield, London to a Jewish family who shared her love of jazz music. At the age of ten, Winehouse founded a short-lived rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour with childhood friend Juliette Ashby. She was trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was twelve years old but was allegedly expelled at fourteen for "not applying herself" and for piercing her nose. Winehouse has created media buzz apart from her singing. Her distinctive style, most notably her former signature beehive hairstyle, has spawned imitators and been the muse for fashion designers, most notably Karl Lagerfeld. The singer's struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as self-destructive behaviour, have become regular tabloid news since 2007. She and her husband have also been plagued by legal troubles that have led to the cancellation of several tour dates. Wikipedia & Nicolas Wallet
Virginia
The Commonwealth of Virginia, an American state, is situated on the Atlantic coast. There are seven million inhabitants in Virginia for less than fifty thousand square miles. Sir Walter Raleigh discovered it in 1584. He was English and gave the name of Queen Elizabeth I to the area. She was known as the 'Virgin Queen' because she never got married. This state has been a Republican state for a long time although the Governor is a Democrat. Eight presidents of the USA were Virginians, that's why one of this state nicknames is 'Mother of Presidents'. But it has got others like 'Old Dominion' referring to King Charles II. The most interesting places to visit in Virginia are museums, the 35 state parks and the beach of Virginia Beach. I have never been there, but I'm going to Virginia Beach this summer and I hope I'm going to discover the American way of life. Mathilde Jacob
Basketball
Basketball was created by James Naismith in 1891. He wanted a sport practicable indoors for the winter and where physical contacts would be less than in football or in baseball. The first match in history was on 21st December 1891. In 1946 the NBA was created to ensure meetings between the best professional teams of the world. Nowadays it's the most important basketball association in the world. The first basketball championship took place in Argentina in 1950 and in 1989 the first dream team, comprised of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, consolidated the USA's domination on this sport. Two teams of five active players try to score points against one another. The game is divided in four quarters of 10 minutes each, times out last 1 min and middle time lasts 11 min. The ball has to be advanced by dribbling and players can do some fouls like double dribbling. Personally I really enjoy basketball because I think it's a good way to exert yourself and to make good friends. Anaëlle Rollé-Tesson and Wikipedia

The Ray-Ban Wayfarer is a design of sunglasses manufactured by Ray-Ban since 1952. Wayfarers were designed by Raymond Stegeman and their design was a radically new shape. They were particular with their distinctive trapezoidal frames and the material used to make it: in fact Wayfarers marked the transition between the period of thin metal frames and the new era of plastic frames. As soon as they were introduced by Ray-Ban the Wayfarer rose in popularity. They were worn by numerous celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, J.F Kennedy or Andy Warhol. Designers unaffiliated with Ray-Ban produced several sunglasses inspired by the Original Wayfarers. After the Wayfarers’ heyday in the 50s and the 60s, sales declined. They reappeared in the 80s when Ray-ban signed a deal to put Wayfarers into movies and TV shows. Wayfarers were the decade’s sunglasses of choice. In the 1990’s the frames became unpopular again and Wayfarers were significantly re-designed. Today Wayfarers have come back into fashion. Camille Chotel & Wikipedia
AppleApple is an American High technology company, created by the “Two Steves”, Jobs and Wozniak. Apple's success really began with the Apple I, in 1977, which was a great success because it was one of the first made for the public and not only for universities. After this wonderful success during the 80’s, Apple decided to bring out two new models, Macintosh and Lisa. The first was also created for the public whereas the second was aimed at high schools. During the 90’s Apple went through a very difficult period, because of the competition with Microsoft and its very cheap model (95) and the lack of originality of Apple models. So it was only in 2005, with the creation of the Intel Processor and later with the success of the iPod and its new design, that Apple found widespread popularity once again. As a conclusion, I would say that Apple is really one of the symbol of the “NAHT” (New Age High Technology) because of its wonderful design and its very practical interface. Guillaume Bellanger
