Ireland in April

I took part in a trip to Ireland last April with my school. We stayed there for two weeks. We went to Letterkenny at our correspondent's. There we did a lot of visits. We went to The Giant's Causeway, Trinity College, The Old Bushmills distillery and Glenveah National Park for example.

After one week and a half in Letterkenny, we went to Dublin. There we did a lot of shopping and visits, we slept in a youth hostel in the town centre.

Before leaving France I was a little bit worried but my correspondent's parents welcomed me like a member of their family so it was so great!! I think Ireland is a gorgeous country and I'm sure I'll never forget this experience.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born on 23rd April 1564 at Stratford-upon-Avon. In London he found work in a theatre and revealed his talent by arranging parts bought to the authors. He performed from 1594 in the company of Lord Hunsdon, which will become Company of the King in 1603, and played successively in the Courtine, in the Rose, in the Globe, then in Blackfriars. At the age of 47, he withdrew to Stratford where he died in April 1616.

We can distinguish three periods in his theatre:
-The youth (1590-1600) marked by a very Elizabethan enthusiasm, is the time of light comedies and historical frescos,
-1600-1608 is the period where, under the effect of political and personal disappointments, the dark tragedies alternate with some comedies
- From 1608, is the return to the appeasing with romantic parts.

He wrote 37 plays, all of his work was published in 1623. He had a gift of observation, a poetic direction, a dramatic genius so exceptional that it could produce immortal master-pieces still represented today all over the world.

Wifi logo

Wi-fi Stands for wireless fidelity, it’s a wireless networking technology used all around the world. It was developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and released in 1997.

Wi-fi was created to be used by electronic devices such as laptops and cell phones or any other mobile devices with wireless network technology.

There are some public areas where computers fitted with wireless network technology can have access to Internet; these areas are called hotspots. Wi-Fi is becoming cheaper because prices are coming down and it’s very easy and practical to use.

Wi-Fi has also some disadvantages: it can be interrupted by others devices. Consulting personal or confidential information would be risky because some hackers can read or copy your data if no encryption is used.

Most new laptops nowadays come equipped with internal wireless networking cards.

Mountain Valley USA

Monument Valley

Monument Valley is a national Park in the state of Utah, in the southwest of the U.S.A. It’s a Navajo Tribal Park. More than three hundred thousand Navajos live in the reservation. There was another tribe before them, the Anasazis (the Hopi’s ancestor).

This Tribal Park is one of the most scenic areas of the U.S.A. It overflows with buttes (high rocks), like Elephant butte, mesas, (large rocks), like Thunderbird Mesa; canyons, and free standing rock formations that defy gravity… All was created by natural forces (wind and water), since the beginning of the world. Cliffs are composed of orange-red sandstone.

A great attribute of Monument-Valley is its wilderness beauty. Many movies were filmed here, and some major productions: “Back to the Future III” in 1988, and “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”, with John Wayne.

Princess Diana

Princess Diana

She was born on July 1st 1961 in Sandringham, England. On July 29th 1981 she married Charles, prince of Wales.

Lady Diana led many struggles for noble causes. She travelled a lot and fought in favour of the homeless and the lepers. Her altruism even led her to forbid antipersonnal mines in Bosnia or in Angola.

The English adulated this simple and generous woman. Soon an emblematic figure was born. In 1996 she divorced but she stayed an exemplary mother for her two sons, Harry and William. She appeared less in public but didn’t stop her many fights. She continued her charities and founded The National Aids Trust to help the Aids patients.

She died on August 31st 1997 in Paris in a car accident. After her death, the interest in Diana’s life stayed high. The Liberty Flame was used like a memorial to the Princess. People brought there flowers and messages for her. But now there is a permanent memorial: the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in London.

Today, Diana’s death still arouses questions and lots of books are written about her life. In fact nobody has forgotten this great lady who was both a symbol of beauty and generosity and a model for her admirers.

my_weblog/images/amish.jpg

The Amish community was founded by Jacob Amman in about 1525 in Switzerland and they spread all over Europe. They are called “the new people”. There are now 134,000 of them.

The Amish emigrated to the U.S and to Canada from Europe because of the high taxes, inflation, wars and religious persecution.

They Amish faced lots of problems, for example in World War 1, when the Amish youths were required to report for duty, some cooperated, most refused and some were physically and mentally abused.

The Amish are a very conservative religious group. Only adults are baptised. The Amish adopted a congregational organisation which is independent and has it own leadership. They don’t allow women to hold positions of power. They speak German to each-other and English to others. They have got their own schools, and they don’t go beyond grade eight. Men and women usually wear plain, dark coloured clothes. They don’t use cars or farm tractors, electricity, television, P.C., or phones. They are all farmers.

To conclude, even if it’s a closed community, they let they children choose if they want to leave or to stay.

He’s married to Kim and has a daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, the only girl he has respected in his life. He had a lot of troubles in his private life. He hasn’t got a good relationships with his mum and he doesn’t know his dad well because he left the family not long after Eminem was born.

I love this rapper who expresses anger or love or revolt in his songs. And he’s not afraid to say what he thinks about anybody.

Sydney

Sydney

Sydney is the most populated city of Austalia, with more than four million inhabitants. It’s located on the South-East coast of Austalia.

At the beginning, Australia was populated by aboriginals, but today their civilization have completely disepear because of the urbanization.
The british navigator James Cook discovered the place of the current Sydney, which he called Port Jackson in 1770. In 1788, Arthur Philip, gave the name of Sydney to this place, he built there a labour camp for british prisoners. From 1800 to 1850, the population of Sydney increased a lot because of the wealth of the region. The discovery of gold in the state of Victoria helped the city to increase its population.

During the Pacific War, the city was a military base for the English or the Americans.

In 2000, the Olympic games were organised in Sydney, and in 2008, The “JMJ” will be in Sydney. So, Sydney is the most important city of Australia and maybe one of the principal cities in the world.

Tea time

Tea time is so British. English people drink on average 5 cups of tea a day. It’s an English tradition which appeared on the 17th century. It was Queen Victoria who introduced this ritual. But tea was so expensive for poorest, it’s why it was initially reserved to the upper social classes. Tea time always occupied a central place in the English social life.

Tea plant is an evergreen plant which belongs to the Camellia’s family. It likes subtropical areas like China, India or Ceylon. There are a lot of English specialities which are delicious with tea like scones, crumpets or muffins. We can eat them nature but English prefer when they are with fresh cream or jam.

At five o’clock, English people drink tea in the living room which is the most comfortable room of the house. It is the housewife who serves the tea. But the best consists to go in a tearoom. In London the most popular is Harrods.

Tolkien Inspiration

J.R.R.Tolkien wrote the first and biggest series of books of heroic fantasy. But no one can invent as long stories without an inspiration in his life or in the history.

Tolkien got his ideas from the world war in the Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. He changed the names of the countries and a bit the geography. In the Silmarillion, he assimilated the middle earth as Europe under the nazi occupation and Valinor as the U.S.A: the elves of Valinor go on middle earth and destruct the evil. He speaks of some elves in middle earth for Great-Britain.

In The Lord of the Rings, he used the first world war more: Mordor = Germany, Gondor = France, Harrad = Italy, Rohan = U.S.A, Shire = England. And the story is the same as in the Silmarillion. We can see that there is no Russia and the reason is easy to understand : Tolkien wrote his books during the Cold War.
