Toronto is a Huron people's word meaning "meeting place". The first European to stand on the shores of Lake Ontario was the French explorer Etienne Brule. In 1760, the British had defeated the French. This town was very important because it was not far from the Niagara river. In 1793, Bristish colonial officials founded the "Town of York" and in 1834, it became the "City of Toronto". The population continued to expand. Canada became a country in 1867, when 50,000 people were living in Toronto. By 1901, 208,000 people lived there. Nowadays, there are over 2,000,000 people in the city.
