Colorado
History
First visited by Spanish explorers in the 1500s, the territory was claimed for Spain by Juan de Ulibarri in 1706. The US obtained eastern colorado as part of the Lousiana purchase in 1803, the central portion in 1845 with the admsission of Texas as a state, and the western part in 1848 as a result of the Mexican war. The 19th century ended with a difficult law and order situation in Colorado. In 1920's the Klu Klux Klan was an important political force in Colorado and they won the governorship in 1925. In 1940's the republican governor of colorado spoke out against racial discrimination and against internment of japanese-americans during World War 2.
