Cahiers du cinema
Cahiers du cinéma was founded by André Bazin, Jacques Doniol Valcroze and Joseph Marie Lo Duca in 1951. In 1954 an article of François Truffaud attacked “La qualité française” and was the manisfesto of the author’s cinema. The group of critics pointed up Hollywood’s films and directors like: Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Robert Aldrich... They centered their critical evaluation on the mise en scène, the photography and shooting that were not considered as important.
Cahiers du cinéma’s critics of the 50’s were constitued by intellectuals as: Jean Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, André Bazin, Claude Chabrol, François Truffaud, Eric Rohmer.... Most of them became directors of great movies: Pierrot le fou/ Godard ; Jules et Jim/ Truffaud, La religieuse/ Rivette... The magazine was essential to the creation of the Nouvelle Vague (NewWave). During the 80’s and 90’s Cahiers du cinéma was composed of new famous critics such as Leos Carax, André Téchiné, Olivier Assayas, Christophe Honoré... Nowdays the editor-in-chief of the magazine is Jean Michel Frodon. Cahiers du cinéma edited about 600 issues.
