Airbus started the development of a very large airliner in the early 1990s to break the dominance that Boeing had enjoyed in this market segment since the early 1970s with its 747.
In June 1994, Airbus began developing its own very large airliner. On April the 2nd of1996, Airbus creates a special division for the design of the A3XX. In addition to technical and commercial teams usual for this type of project, Airbus decides on the participation of airlines in its development.
Four countries participated to this project: Great-Britain, Germany, Spain and France, it was a real European project.
In 1997, the general configuration is frozen.
