Rochester Castle
Rochester catle wasbuilt on the highest part of Rochester's Roman city wall, to defend the crossing of the River Medway. This Norman bishop's castle is one of the best preserved and finest examples of Norman architecture in England.
Construction
This castle was built by William the Conqueror's finest architect in1087 at a cost of just £60. Standing 113feet, the keep dominates the skyline of Rochesterand is the tallest in England.
Defense
The castle was not defensive building, but a palatial residence for the most powerful churchman in England.
