Builder Forts Civil War

After Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon, his catholic wife, in 1833, England was threatened by attack by France and Spain.

King Henry VIII set about building a series of forts to protect the southern coast.

 

Deal castle is one of these forts. It is plain, functional constructions whose only purpose was defence. It was built between 1539 and 1540.

It consists of six semi-circular bastions in the form of a tower with an outer wall of the same shape to protect it.
This castle was not attacked until 1648.

The castle was a royalist Stronghold during the Civil War and when it was attacked by Parliamentarians suffered extensive damage.

The castle was not attacked again until Wold War II when it was bombed.
