Biography

Chad Gaylord Smith was born the 25th of October of 1961, in the state of Minnesota (at the north of USA). His parents are Curtis and Joan Smith. Since he was a kid he lived in a music world with his two older sisters, Bradley and Pamela, and Brad, his brother (a guitarist).

At the age of 8, he received a pair of drumstick, and a drum. He became the drummer of the band of his brother, in a Jazz studio.

He later moved to Michigan, in Bloomfield Hills, where he ran away from home for a period of time. When he returned with a dog called Bong, his mother sent him to a boarding school, kept the dog and shortened his name to Bo. He was very still, at the Lasher High School, and he came back at home fairly often.

During his adolescence, he listened famous band, like Kiss, Led Zep’ or Black Sabbath. More later, he worked in a series of a job, and he played in several band, like E-Trian or Tyrant; he having played the drums since a very young age .In 1984, he recorded a disc with Toby Red, but their disc no had a veritable success. He left the band shortly afterwards. In his twenties, he moved to California, where his brother Brad lived.
He went to Los Angeles, where he auditioned for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, thanks to a friend. In fact, Jack Irons (the drummer of the RHCP) has left his band, because of the death of Hillel Slovak (the guitarist) from a drug overdose. So, in 1988, he began to play with the RHCP. They released their first album with Chad (Mother’s Milk), which is a success.He married his first wife, Maria, an artist, in 1996, and they divorced the following year, after the birth of their daughter, Manon St John Smith (1997).
In 1998,his son Justin was born, and two years later, his daughter Ava was born. In May 2004, he married an architect, Nancy Mack, with whom he has a baby son, Cole. When he isn’t in tour or in studio, he likes scuba diving or basket-ball. As well he loves also the Harley, his "main mode of transportation". Chad can also play a small amount of guitar.
With the Red Hot, he released several album, but he also recorded songs with Dave Navarro (ex guitarist), or Flea (the bassist). He played with The Offspring or the Foo Fighters or also with Glenn Hughes (deep purple and Black Sabbath). In 1993, he released an educational video for aspiring drummers He was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing the world's largest drum kit (308 pieces).
